Current Events Newscast

DESCRIPTION: Each class will create a 20 minute or less newscast examining five issues being discussed often on the news in the United States today.

YOUR ROLE: You will create a forty second (no longer) segment that will become a part of a news broadcast. You will be in charge of editing and adding effects to your segment.

ISSUES:
Health Care Reform – Brief history, Current proposals
War in Afghanistan – History of involvement, troop levels, future
Local Downsizing – Communities where it has occurred, its future in villages
NYS Budget – History and proposals to close budget gap
Recession – History and actions to combat it

PROJECT OPTIONS: You will need to decide within your group who will do each part.
  1. Anchor – You will provide a factual background of the issue. Describe the five W’s (who, what, where, when why). You should describe the most recent events concerning this issue.
  2. Reporter – You will describe why this issue is important to Americans. You should also describe how this issue affects the United States. Try to think on a personal, national, AND international level.
  3. Interviewer – You will need to write a few (two to three) interview questions. You should ask provocative questions (requiring deep, insightful thought). During the first ten seconds of your segment, you should “frame” the question or describe what you wanted to find out. The next 30 seconds should include “snippets” of people’s comments (with your transition comments). During the last 20 seconds, you should describe your take on what the overall public opinion of your issue is.
  4. Commercial Producer – Put together a short infomercial (think of commercials about politicians on television) arguing a specific point of view. You should DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN your opinion on the issue. You should also describe what you believe should happen in the future regarding your issue.
